Blog: Meet Me At 9

April 27th, 2015 · Uncategorized

The other night I was having a hunt through my wardrobe when I stumbled across an old notebook I had as a kid: A4-sized, ring bound, and iridescent purple-pink. Such taste. I almost put it back where I found it. Part of me didn’t want the distraction, and I sort of dreaded what embarrassing material I might find inside. But curiosity got the better of me, so there I stood, on a chair, looking through the pages for the first time in years and years, chuckling.

One of the first things I noticed was the sheer number of horses I had drawn.  I don’t even remember being that in to horses. Who knows where that obsession came from, or where it went. I began to look for signs of my adult self forming in what I put on paper as a nine year-old.

Three pages in, I had formed a band (hurrah!) called Nickerbockerglory (I was probably proud to be able to pronounce and spell this word, making it an obvious choice for a band name), and the first and only song penned was called ‘Try Me’. I’ll spare you the verses – to read them is very painful – but here’s the chorus: ‘Try me! Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Ay-ay! Ay-ay! Mm-mm-mm yeh-mm’. Catchy, right? I’ve written worse.

As well as horses, it seems I liked to draw: stairs, faces, dogs, paws, flags, clouds, Tutankhamun, rabbits, mice, snakes, bats, cars and cargo ships.

Most of all, I wrote stories. For a nine year-old, the tone was pretty mature. Check this from ‘Pocahontas’: ‘He had always had ambition to sail the seven seas and find treasure, gold. That would be terrific he thought. As the ship left the shore the sun began to rise like as if saying goodbye’. Touching. Stories were always helpfully illustrated, and all kinds of subjects found their way into my writing – a poem about Hitler on one page, Noddy on the next. No subject too big or small, and all written with the greatest attention to neatness in felt tip pen.

Looking back 16 years later, what struck me was how I wrote what I wanted to without thinking about it, or worrying whether it was any good. I could write a little story or bunch of silly lyrics without immediate judgement or criticism (if anything, a little more might’ve been good), or wondering what this thing will be, if it will be liked, successful, or pay my rent. I’m usually pretty determined to not be put off by those niggling little doubts that can fly around when I’m working on something, but this reminded me of a time before they even existed.

I’m now writing toward the next thing – be it EP or album-shaped – to follow Water, Carry Me, and nine year-old me is saying just go for it.
